A balança comercial do agronegócio brasileiro de 1989 a 2005 AgEcon
Barros, Geraldo Sant'Ana de Camargo; Silva, Simone Fioritti.
This study aims to analyze the agribusiness contribution to Brazil’s trade balance. A new classification of the agribusiness trade balance was proposed and used to analyze the aspects of the exported products –agricultural products, products of animal origin, industrialized foods and imported inputs – represented by fertilizers. Imports and exports vector autoregression models were used to explain the behavior of these variables. An increase of 1% in the attractiveness – product of the exchange rate by the international prices – boosts immediately the exports of non processed agricultural products by 1.71%, stabilizing at 2% after some trimesters. The attractiveness explains 60 to 74% of the forecast error variances of these exportats. It is noted that an...

A JAPÁN GAZDASÁG NÉHÁNY JELLEGZETESSÉGE A XXI. SZÁZAD FORDULÓJÁN AgEcon
Tompe, Ferenc.
Ezek a jelenségek újból felkeltették a szakemberek érdeklődését a japán gazdaság iránt, egyfelől az előállt helyzet okainak feltárására, másfelől a megol-dások keresésére.

The economic development is generated by the continuous technical and economic innovation, what should be based on high level basic and applied research activity. For these reasons applied research based on high level may lay foundations. The utilization of the result of basic research may mean a lasting economic benefit. A country needs him for this for well-funded one to be, has to pursue a research-developmental activity with suitable intensity. Currently the intensity of R&D activity is very diverse in the world's countries, the R+D proportions of expenditures to GDP are between 0.8 and 5.0 %. The low research intensity is typical of the poorer countries, generally. Big efforts are put onto the increase of the efficiency of the research and...

Access of Eastern African Farmers to Domestic and International Markets: Opportunities and Constraints AgEcon
Bahiigwa, Godfrey.
This paper reviews the opportunities and challenges that Eastern African farmers face in accessing domestic, regional and international markets. With rising population and incomes, domestic markets offer great opportunities for farmers. However, because of structural, institutional and organizational constraints, small scale rural farmers may not benefit much from domestic urban markets unless they are organized and trained to meet the high quality product standards demanded by urban consumers and supermarkets. ECA countries stand to gain more by investing in commodities that are consumed within the region, than from traditional cash crops destined for international markets. Regional integration offers opportunities for larger markets and efficiency gains...

Agricultural Growth, Poverty, and Nutrition in Tanzania AgEcon
Pauw, Kalie; Thurlow, James.
Rapid economic growth has failed to significantly improve poverty and nutrition outcomes in Tanzania. This raises concerns over a decoupling of growth, poverty, and nutrition. We link recent production trends to household incomes and caloric availability using a dynamic computable general equilibrium and micro-level poverty and nutrition modules. Results indicate that the structure of economic growth—not the level—is currently constraining the rate of poverty reduction in Tanzania. Agricultural growth has been driven by larger-scale farmers that are less likely to be poor. Growth has further been concentrated in crops grown in only a few regions of the country. Slow expansion of food crops and livestock also explains the weak relationship between...

Agricultural R&D and Economic Growth AgEcon
Dinopoulos, Elias.
The paper develops a dynamic general-equilibrium model of Schumpeterian growth which is fueled by industrial and agricultural R&D. The former is private and results in better production processes, whereas the latter is government-financed (public and applied) R&D and generates better crop varieties. The arrival of innovations in either sector is stochastic. The model is used to calculate the steady-state equilibrium and the growth-maximizing mix of agricultural and industrial R&D investments. It is also used to highlight the properties of social rates of return (ROR) of R&D which are based on partial-equilibrium calculations. These measures overestimate the true agricultural social ROR and underestimate the true industrial social ROR of...

Agricultural Sector and Economic Growth in Tunisia: Evidence from Co-integration and Error Correction Mechanism AgEcon
Chebbi, Houssem Eddine; Lachaal, Lassaad.
For the past two decades, Tunisia has been undertaken important structural reforms, which call in most cases for market and trade liberalization (agricultural structural adjustment program, GATT reforms, free trade area with the European Union). The private-led type of growth strategy with less government intervention has culminated these last years into a more rapid economic growth and openness. Within this context, this paper examines the agricultural sector role into the economic growth and its interactions with the other sectors using time-series co-integration techniques. We use annual data from 1961 to 2005 to estimate a VAR model that includes GDP indices of five sectors in Tunisian economy. Empirical results from this study indicate that in the...

Agriculture and Rural Economic Growth AgEcon
Deller, Steven C.; Gould, Brian W.; Jones, Bruce L..
The role of farm dependence and size on rural economic growth is examined with data from 2,240 nonmetropolitan U.S. counties for the period 1990-1995. A simple neoclassical model of regional economic growth is set forth with a central question relating to the role of agriculture on rural economic convergence. Traditional neoclassical theory predicts that poor rural areas should grow proportionally faster than rich areas. As interpreted in the academic literature and popular press, a preponderance of small family farms should enhance growth. Results suggest that a higher level of local dependence on production agriculture could lower growth rates.

Asymmetric property rights in China's economic growth AgEcon
Zhang, Xiaobo.
This paper highlights the difference between secure investor property rights and loosely defined individual property rights. Globalization and fiscal decentralization have intensified this difference. On the one hand, in the presence of mobile foreign direct investments and under the arrangement of fiscal decentralization, local governments compete vigorously to offer various protections on the property rights of investors; on the other hand, local governments and developers attempt to acquire land at as low price as possible by taking advantage of the loopholes inherent in the Chinese law. Secure investor property rights together with weak protections on individuals’ land property rights is argued to be one of the major drivers of China’s rapid economic...

CIVIC COMMUNITY APPROACHES TO RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE SOUTH: ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH PROSPERITY AgEcon
Robinson, Kenneth L.; Lyson, Thomas A.; Christy, Ralph D..
The free market-based policies of the corporate community model have skewed economic development across the South. For many small, rural communities, the consequences of global capitalism have resulted in declining real wages, high underemployment, and increasing rates of income inequality. Backed by recent scholarship and grassroots movements that suggest both civic engagement and the presence of smaller-scale, locally controlled enerprises can help determine whether communities prosper or decline, this paper explores the links between social structure and rural development in the South. The goal is to expand our understanding of civic community theory as an alternative to the neoclassical economic model of development. Using a local problem-solving...

Climate change policy in a growing economy under catastrophic risks AgEcon
Tsur, Yacov; Zemel, Amos.
Under risk of catastrophic climate change, the occurrence hazard is added to the social discount rate. As a result, the social discount rate (i) increases and (ii) turns endogenous to the global warming policy. The second effect bears profound policy implications that are magnifed by economic growth. In particular, it implies that green- house gases (GHG) emission should gradually be brought to a halt. Due to the public bad nature of the catastrophic risk, the second effect is ignored in a competitive allocation and unregulated economic growth will give rise to excessive emissions. We find that the GHG emission paths under the optimal and competitive growth regimes lie at the extreme ends of the range of feasible emissions. We derive the Pigouvian hazard...

Cointegration Analysis on the Relation between Urbanization and Economic Growth in China AgEcon
Liu, Ai-ying; Yao, Li-fen; Li, Qing-chen.
This paper utilizes cointegration theory, error correcting model and Granger causality testing theory to make an empirical research on the relation between urbanization and GDP in China, and also implements a comparative analysis to the relation between three industries and degree of urbanization, the related coeffecient is 0.97, 0.95, 0.97, 0.97. And the result shows a long-term balance between these two factors, and the promoting effect to tertiary industry by urbanization is more obvious. Urbanization and economic growth are the long-term balanced relations. In the long-term balance, every 1% increment of urbanization can make 4.82% increment of GDP; In short-term balance, if the balance depart from the long-term balance at the i-th term, the model will...

Co-integration Analysis on the Relationship between Methane Energy Development and Economic Growth in the City of Huixian AgEcon
Liu, Xiao-ling; Zheng, Xun-gang.
Based on the statistical data of Huixian from 1992 to 2010, we analyze the long-term and short-term relationship between Huixian's methane energy development and GDP by using co-integration test and error correction model. The empirical results show that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between methane energy and GDP in me city of Huixlan, and which is the one-way Granger causality of methane and GDP. In conclusion, the paper puts forward some steps about spurring economic growth, methane development and utilization in Huixian.

Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Torero, Maximo.

Corruption and economic growth in Lebanon AgEcon
Farida, Moe; Ahmadi-Esfahani, Fredoun Z..
This paper seeks to examine the impact of corruption on economic growth in Lebanon. Using a neoclassical model, we hypothesise that corruption reduces the country's standard of living as measured by real per capita GDP. We show that corruption deters growth indirectly through reducing the factor input productivity in a Cobb-Douglas production function. We provide empirical evidence suggesting that corruption increases inefficiencies in government expenditure and reduces investment and human capital productivity, leading to a negative impact on output. The implications of the analysis are explored.

Creating the Conditions for International Business Expansion: The Impact of Regulation on Economic Growth in Developing Countries - A Cross-Country Analysis AgEcon
Jililian, Hossein; Kirkpatrick, Colin; Parker, David.
The role of an effective regulatory regime in promoting economic growth and development and therefore international business has generated considerable interest among researchers and practitioners in recent years. In particular, building effective regulatory structures in developing countries is not simply an issue of the technical design of the most appropriate regulatory instruments, it is also concerned with the quality of supporting regulatory institutions and capacity. Many of the institutions that support markets are publicly provided and the effectiveness of these regulatory institutions can be expected to be an important determinant of how well markets function. This paper explores the role of regulation in affecting economic outcomes using an...
